Walmart launches sustainable Joyspun socks — Walmart.com

Walmart partnered with UNIFI to launch a sustainable product made from REPREVE Takeback recycled polyester. The first commercial item using this fabric is a pair of ankle-cut, lightly frilled socks under Walmart’s private brand, Joyspun. This innovative textile incorporates at least 50% recycled polyester derived from textile waste and post-consumer plastics, such as water bottles, through UNIFI’s proprietary recycling process.

The initiative combats fashion industry waste, in which 15% of fabric is discarded during production and millions of pounds of clothing end up in landfills annually. Walmart’s Textile Takeback closes the loop by turning leftover fabric scraps and used textiles back into new products, reducing environmental impact.

Key takaways:

  • The Joyspun socks are made with REPREVE Takeback fabric, combining recycled textile scraps and plastic waste.

  • Walmart’s private brand team emphasizes collaboration across departments to bring sustainable products to market without sacrificing quality or cost.

  • Early sales show strong customer acceptance, with the socks becoming one of the top sellers in their category.
