The importance of Walmart’s FYE calendar — 3-Minute Insights

Our most recent guest on 3-Minute Insights is Heather Reid, 8th & Walton’s Director of Education-Canada and Accounting Insights, and we’re discussing the importance of the Walmart FYE calendar.

Lainie: One of the most popular pages visited on the 8th & Walton website is the calendar page. Why is it so critical to suppliers?

Heather: It’s all about planning and understanding how it works, too. That’s important. Let’s take a moment to review how it all works. The next year is 2026, but Walmart refers to it as FYE (Fiscal Year End) 2027. What that means is it ends in January of 2027. February 2026 to January 2027 is Walmart’s fiscal year. They also track weeks, so we need to understand that these start on Saturday and ends on Friday.

There’s also the way they arrange the months, called a “4-5-4” calendar. That’s a pattern with four weeks in February, five weeks in March, and four in April. This pattern repeats throughout the year, adding up to 13 weeks for each quarter. Multiply that by four, and you get your 52 weeks for the year.

(What happens when you have a 53-week calendar? Read Heather’s recent blog post to find out!)

Lainie: Why is it so important that our suppliers stay ahead on that calendar?

Heather: It’s all about aligning with that calendar and being prepared for planning. Knowing when your rollbacks will occur, when back-to-school season happens, and when the holidays are, all of that hinges on aligning your systems and teams to the Walmart calendar.

If everyone is in sync with how that calendar works, everything flows smoothly. There won’t be any surprises, like suddenly realizing Walmart’s week runs from Saturday to Friday, while your team was working from Monday to Sunday. That can throw production off unless you’re prepared.

Lainie: Do you recommend that suppliers have a point person to manage the calendar, or should it be a team effort?

Heather: Everyone needs to be aware of the calendar. It seems so simple, but everyone, from supply planning to replenishment to accounting, needs to understand and have access to it. I highly recommend that someone on your team download and distribute the calendar so everyone is aligned.

Lainie: If supplier teams want to find that calendar, where can they get it?

Heather: It’s on our website, Eighthandwalton.com. Look for the “Resources” tab at the top. Within resources, you’ll find “Walmart calendars,” and there’s an FYE, fiscal year end 2027—that’s the one you want for next year. It’s a PDF. We just ask for your email address, and we’ll send it to you, all for free.
